Gala's winning streak comes to an end

Tuesday, 29th September, 2009
UEFA's team of the week Galatasaray had their perfect start to the Super Lig season brought to an end following their 1-1 draw with Eskisehirspor. Harry made his fourth consecutive start for the team however the wear and tear of playing three full 90 minute matches in the previous two weeks were beginning to show and he was given a rest in the 66th minute. Interestingly, Harry played the first half with black boots before returning in the second half with his favoured white boots. Galatasaray now sit second on the table, two points behind arch rivals Fenerbahce.

This Thursday Galatasaray host Austrian side Sturm Graz for their next Europa League match before travelling away to Ankaragucu for their Super Lig match on Sunday. Harry is more than likely to be rested for the Sturm Graz match given that Elano and Milan Baros started the previous match on the bench. Following the match against  13th placed Ankaragucu, Harry will fly back to Sydney for Australia's friendly against the Netherlands. The last time the two nations met, Harry scored a goal as Australia defeated the 3rd ranked nation 2-1.

Harry gives words of encouragement, or in some cases discouragement as you try to kick a can into the bin.

Harry voted Australia's favourite footy player

Friday, 25th September, 2009
Readers of Foxtel magazine have voted Harry as the best Australian football player out of football, Rugby League and Aussie Rules players from the past 25 years. Harry was stoked at the honour saying, "It's fantastic. For the Australian public to think of me this way is a great honour and a very big surprise. It's a shock to be honest." Harry went on to say "I can't thank everyone enough. It's one of the biggest awards I could achieve because it's for all codes, not just football. All I can say is a massive thank you."

The website has been updated with photos from Galatasaray's previous Lig victory, as well as a few new wallpapers and photos in the Politix album.

This weekend Galatasaray have a tough test in the Super Lig as they host 3rd placed Eskisehir. Eskisehir have three wins and three draws so far this season with all their wins coming from home matches. After losing to Eskisehir twice last season, Gala's players will be looking for revenge and keep their winning streak alive. Former Galatasaray striker Umit Karan will be captaining the visitors in what will prove to be an emotional return to the Ali Sami Yen. Harry is likely to come off the bench for this match after playing three successive 90 minute matches whilst Shabani Nonda looks to be rewarded for his hat-trick in the previous match with a starting berth. The match will be played on Sunday evening (AEST 3am Monday).

Below is an interview with Harry's wife Sheree from the end of last year. She talks about going to see him play and how it is great to have him enjoying his football again.

Happy Birthday Harry!

Tuesday, 22nd September, 2009
Harry turns 31 today so we wish him all the best on his birthday and will be hoping he has a great game today. In other news, Harry has been ranked as the 12th most expensive player in the Turkish Super Lig. Ajansspor reports that Harry is now estimated to be worth 7.5 million Euros. Galatasaray captain Arda Turan is the most expensive player in the league valued at 15 million Euros whilst Elano is second at 12.5 million. Galatasaray are looking to extend both Harry's and Milan Baros' contracts.

Gala win 3-1 in Athens

Sunday, 20th September, 2009
Frank Rijkaard's side picked up all three points after a 3-1 victory over Panathinaikos on Thursday night. Elano scored a double whilst Milan Baros grabbed the other goal. Harry played all 90 minutes yet again as Arda Turan started the match on the bench. Next up for Galatasaray are Turkish league dwellers Kasimpasa. Kasimpasa are winless so far this season and have only managed 2 goals in their opening 5 matches. The match will be played on the eve of Harry's 31st birthday so hopefully he'll get another 90 minutes and possibly give himself an early birthday present of a goal or two, or three!

Harry helps guide Gala to victory

Sunday, 13th September, 2009
Harry played all 90 minutes and had an assist as Galatasaray won 3-0 in their derby against Besiktas. Galatasaray took an early lead thanks to a 4th minute header by defender Mustafa Sarp. The match remained 1-0 until the 65th minute when Milan Baros knocked in a rebound and it became 3-0 17 minutes later as Harry crossed the ball to an open Milan Baros who scored his brace. Harry had a couple of chances himself however he put the ball wide of the goal on those occasions. Click here to view more photos from the match. Galatasaray now sit atop the Turkish Lig table with a maximum 15 points from 5 matches.

Kewell to extend Gala contract?

Friday, 11th September, 2009
News reports from Fanatik in Turkey are suggesting that Harry may be signing a contract extension with Galatasaray. His current contract expires at the end of this season but Harry has enjoyed his stay so far and even though he said, "I miss my family here" he also said, "it is a fantastic feeling to live in Istanbul".

In other news, flash floods in Istanbul have left a large part of Istanbul under water and led to 31 deaths. The torrential rain which was described by the Environment Minister as the "worst in 500 years" may mean this weekend's derby match with Besiktas could be postponed.

All of Gala's players who were on international duty should be returning. Star striker Milan Baros was the hero of Wednesday's World Cup Qualifiers as he scored 4 goals in the Czech Republic's 7-0 rout of San Marino.

Harry in starting XI for derby match

Harry in action against Besiktas last season
Tuesday, 8th September, 2009
Harry looks set to start this weekend's derby match against Besiktas at Ali Sami Yen. Elano would have been Rijkaard's first preference however his participation in Brazil's victory over Argentina where here provided an assist as well as his possible participation in Brazil's match tomorrow against Chile means he will arrive in Istanbul jetlagged and unprepared to start the match. Harry's teammate Arda Turan and Milan Baros both managed to score a goal apiece for their respective countries over the weekend. The clash with last year's league winner Besiktas will be Gala's first real test of the season even though the Black Eagles are currently sitting on 6th in the table. Following this match, Galatasaray will travel to Greece for their first match of the Europa group stage against Panathinaikos on the 17th.

Kewell article in September issue of Qantas magazine

Thursday, 3rd September, 2009
Harry features in this month's Qantas inflight magazine 'The Australian Way'.  The article talks about Harry's 'rebirth' in Turkey and also seeks his views on the A-League in Australia. Harry conceeded that "You can't compete with Europe. It is the heart of football" before going on to say that "if players want to play at the highest level or they want to compete against the best, they are going to have to leave Australia." Harry believes "...we need the money. We need the crowds and we need passion behind it" if football is to succeed in Australia. When asked about the future, Harry says "I'd love to get a squad of 12-year-old kids, the age I was when I got spotted, work on them, teach them what I know, have them until they are about 16, and see them progress. If I'm fortunate enough to be able to do the things that I love to do, that's what I'll do." To read more, you can download the entire article here.

Harry omitted from Korea clash

Wednesday, 2nd September, 2009
Harry has been left out of the Australia squad that will face Korea Republic in Seol this coming Saturday. Despite playing 30 minutes in the last match, Australia's manager Pim Verbeek said "his ankle is not 100%" and "as a result it is not worth the risk of bring Harry to Korea for the match and it is better that he receives treatment instead." Along with Harry, David Carney who recently signed with FC Twente, Danny Invincibile and Luke Wilkshire will not be participating in the match.

Harry heads home another goal!

Tuesday, 1st September, 2009
Harry now has 5 goals in 8 matches following his opener in last night's league match against Ankaraspor. Harry started the match on the bench and was brought on during the hour mark along with Shabani Nonda for Elano and Milan Baros. The double substitution was just what Galatasaray needed with both Harry and Nonda scoring to make it a 2-0 victory for the visitors. Harry headed home an Arda corner less than 15 minutes of taking the field and Nonda wrapped things up with a goal in the 83rd minute. You can see Harry's header below whilst match photos have been uploaded here.

Gala progress to Europa group stage

Friday, 28th August, 2009
Galatasaray have advanced to the group stages of the Europa League following an aggregate 6-1 victory over Estonian side Levadia. Rijkaard fielded a second string side for the second leg last night where they drew 1-1. Harry took a knock to his ankle in the first leg and consequently missed the trip to Estonia as well as last weekend's domestic league match. Harry however should be able to play this coming Monday against Anakaraspor and be ready for Australia's friendly against South Korea next Saturday.

Harry has been playing well so far this season. He has managed 4 goals in 7 matches, all of which can be viewed here. Galatasaray are currently second on the Turkish Lig table having won their first three matches.

Several galleries on the site have been updated. There are now new photos from the 09/10 domestic season with a training gallery, Europa gallery and Super Lig gallery. Photos from Australia's 3-0 victory over Ireland have also been added to the Friendlies gallery.

Below are a few videos that have arised recently. The first is Harry doing his best C3PO impression in a training session, the second is a SOLO advertisement in which Harry has a very small cameo and the last video is an interview with Harry that was shown in the first episode of 'Football Stars of Tomorrow'.
